Graduate students

Josué Rodríguez

Has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez. Currently, Rodríguez studies a doctorate in Biology, at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. His diverse approaches to Deep Learning and computer vision infrastructure allow him to effectively organize, plan and administrate the team’s tasks and goals.

In CyIndiBee, Rodríguez tests Machine Learning models for pollinator monitoring. He also guides graduate and undergraduate students through the investigative process. He wishes to build upon his research at CyIndiBee and to continue in Biology and Computer Science investigations.

Luke Meyers

Meyers has a background in Biology, with a focus on Ecology. He worked on computer vision and bioinformatics analysis on the NSF sponsored BigDBee project. On CyIndiBee, he develops and tests new AI Deep Learning models.

The investigator also manages datasets generated from video monitoring of bees, from an artificial flower patch, and evaluates Deep Learning models for the reidentification of individual honeybees, using paint marks. In 2021, he presented the research at the CV4Animals workshop.

His experience working in Biology labs allows him to bring a more traditional perspective to the research process. Meyers wishes to leverage this experience for further research in ecology labs, which use computer vision to unlock new methods and insights.

Gabriel A. Santiago Plaza

Santiago Plaza has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and is currently studying for his master’s degree. On his second year of his undergraduate program, he developed various applications, which included an interactive map for shelters, during hurricane María. He focused his career on programming, software engineering, data science and AI (Artificial Intelligence) research.

He views the CyIndiBee project as an opportunity to hone his graphical programming skills. Santiago’s greatest strength is his ability to mentor undergraduate students. In the future, he would like to apply his knowledge to educate high school students in computer science skills.

Carlos Pérez Vinelli

This investigator began his academic career with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Labor Relations. Afterward, he started studying Computer Science at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. Currently, he studies for a doctorate in Computer Science at this institution.

When hurricane María crossed the island, Pérez Vinelli began investigating “mesh networks”, as a way to decentralize communications and transfer data through cloud systems. He applied his knowledge to create distributive systems, called edge networks, which CyIndiBee uses to process information from the lab remotely.

Pérez Vinelli focuses on technical aspects of the CyIndiBee research, such as handling the NVIDIA Jetson equipment that processes information in the edge networks. In the future, he wishes to study at Yale and return to Puerto Rico, to continue generating knowledge, in the UPR’s institutional setting.

Undergraduate students

Nestor Martinez Rivera

Martínez Rivera began his undergraduate career at the University of Puerto Rico, in Mayagüez. Starting his second year of college, he enrolled at the UPR, Río Piedras campus, because he wished to specialize in programming, with the Computer Science department’s curriculum.

He’s knowledgeable in full-stack web development, and database management. In CyIndiBee, he builds a website that provides an updated live feed of data, from the lab.

With this project, he aims to hone his problem-solving skills, and branch out to programming Artificial Intelligence. He wishes to become a software engineer and implement the experience he gathered from this research in the future.

Jancarlos González Vélez

González Vélez is an undergraduate Computer Science student, coursing his third year at the University of Puerto Rico, in Río Piedras. This semester, he began specializing in Artificial Intelligence development. In CyIndiBee, González Vélez handles the Google Cloud platform connected to the project’s local servers. In the future, he wishes to branch out to software engineering, while implementing AI approaches.
